Many GMs prefer to use the Point Buy Method over rolling ability scores, for a start it gives the GM more control over character generation so he can better predict a characters abilities when he's planning his game.
A second reason why the Point Buy Method is preferred is because it eliminates, much to my friends thanks, the rare occasion of having a character with mostly low ability scores, but maybe not so much to my friends delight, or mostly high scores.
In the interest of giving a two sided argument I must say that many GMs and players, myself included something, favour the rolling of dice because were mad... sorry, no, it's because we enjoy the challenge of playing an underpowered, or overpowered, character in a campaign for more 'average' heroes.
My house rule regarding ability score generation is:
Use whatever meathod you like or are allowed to, just give yourself a chalange and remember that all powerful heros just get boring.
